AI and Your Career: How AI is Changing Career Development

Introduction

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the world of work — and career development is no exception. From scanning CVs to shortlisting candidates, from matching job seekers with roles to preparing for interviews, AI is now woven into every stage of the recruitment process. It also plays a role in workplace learning and development.

For professionals, this creates both opportunities and challenges. Understanding how AI works — and how to use it effectively — can make the difference between being overlooked and standing out.

This blog kicks off my AI & Your Career Series, where we’ll explore practical, ethical ways to use AI tools to boost your job search, improve applications, prepare for interviews, and develop your career — without losing the human insight and strategy that make your career unique.

💡 AI is powerful, but it cannot replace human insight, empathy, and support.

The future of career coaching isn’t about choosing between humans and machines. It’s about combining the best of both: using AI for speed and efficiency, and coaching for clarity, confidence, and direction.

1. Why AI Matters in Career Development

Recruiters, employers, and job boards are increasingly using AI-driven tools to speed up hiring, filter applications, and match candidates with suitable roles.

One of the biggest drivers? Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

  • What they are: Software used to scan, store, and filter CVs

  • How they work: ATS reads CVs, identifies keywords from job descriptions, and scores applicants

  • Who uses them: Large organisations, public sector employers, recruitment agencies, and smaller companies

In the UK, employers from the NHS to financial institutions rely on ATS tools like Workday, Taleo, Greenhouse, and Lever.

👉 If your CV isn’t ATS-friendly, it may never reach a human recruiter.

AI is now present at almost every stage of career development:

  • Recruitment & ATS screening → Systems filter CVs before they reach hiring managers

  • AI job matching → LinkedIn, Indeed, and Google Jobs suggest roles tailored to your profile

  • Market insights → Tools like Perplexity.ai deliver instant research on industries and employers

  • Upskilling suggestions → LinkedIn Learning and Coursera recommend learning pathways

These tools are invaluable — but they don’t tell you what’s right for you. That’s where human judgment and coaching come in.

2. Is Using AI for Your Job Search “Cheating”?

A question I hear often as a coach:

“If I use AI to write my CV or prepare for interviews… is that cheating?”

The answer: No — if you use it correctly.

AI is a support tool, just like spellcheck, LinkedIn, or career assessments. The risks come when you:

  • Copy outputs blindly → leading to generic or inaccurate applications

  • Lose your authentic voice → recruiters want to hear your story

  • Over-rely on automation → strategy, empathy, and insight can’t be replaced

Use AI as your assistant, not your author. Generate ideas, tailor drafts, and speed up preparation — but always add your personal touch.

3. The Ethics of AI in Career Planning

AI tools are powerful, but they aren’t neutral or risk-free. Here are three key ethical considerations:

a) Accuracy & Bias

AI learns from past data, which can reflect existing biases. This may affect:

  • Who gets shortlisted

  • Which skills are valued

  • How interview questions are framed

Always fact-check AI insights and keep applications authentic.

b) Privacy & Data Security

Be mindful of what you upload:

  • Avoid sharing your full CV with unknown platforms

  • Check data policies before using free resume tools

  • Protect sensitive employer or project information

c) Personal Integrity

AI should assist — not invent. Your achievements and values must remain true to you.

Golden rule: Use AI to support your career, not to create a fictional one.

4. Why Coaching Matters More Than Ever

AI can analyse keywords and trends, but it cannot provide human strategy. Coaching helps you:

  • Clarify your values, skills, and goals

  • Build confidence during transitions

  • Overcome limiting beliefs

  • Tell your story authentically in applications and interviews

  • Receive realistic feedback (AI can be overly flattering)

  • Learn strategies for interviews, networking, and negotiation

  • Stay accountable and motivated

AI speeds up preparation. Coaching adds meaning and direction.

5. AI + Coaching: A Powerful Partnership

The future isn’t AI or coaching — it’s both. Here’s how they complement each other:

Finding Roles

  • What AI Provides: Job alerts, matching tools, market trend analysis

  • What Coaching Adds: Tailored strategies for roles that genuinely fit your values and goals

Tailoring CVs

  • What AI Provides: ATS-friendly drafts, keyword suggestions, formatting support

  • What Coaching Adds: Crafting your authentic story and building a personal brand that stands out

Researching Companies & Skills

  • What AI Provides: Employer insights, skills gap analysis, training recommendations

  • What Coaching Adds: Focusing on the skills you’ll enjoy using and aligning with your long-term career path

Interview Preparation

  • What AI Provides: Practice questions, feedback tools, and structured rehearsal

  • What Coaching Adds: Confidence, storytelling, and strategies to manage nerves under pressure

👉 In my Career Change, Career Development, and Interview Coaching Programmes, I help clients use AI effectively while keeping the focus firmly on them.

That means:

  • Using AI for structure, not voice

  • Interpreting assessments like the Highlands Ability Battery with human expertise

  • Providing realistic, personalised feedback

  • Offering empathy and accountability — things AI can’t do

Conclusion

AI is here to stay, and it’s transforming how we manage careers. But the heart of career development will always be human — your motivations, your values, your goals.

  • AI helps you move faster

  • Coaching helps you move in the right direction

Together, they provide clarity, confidence, and momentum.
