7 tips to be happier at work

We all go through ups and downs in our careers and jobs, whether that is on a daily, weekly or annual basis. Sometimes, have to work at keeping ourselves enthused and motivated. Here are some more tips for you to be happier at work:

  1. Remember what you enjoy at work

    Think back over your career so far and find times that you have really enjoyed. What made you happy? What skills were you using? What values were being met?

    Then think about how you can do more of what you enjoy. For example, if you enjoy planning events, is there anything at work that you can get involved with? If not, what about outwith work? If you feel motivated and energised in your interests outside of work, this can be contagious and spread to your work-life.

  2. Realise what you do not enjoy about work

    Itemise all the things that you do in your day that de-energise you or you do not enjoy. How could you do them differently? Can you get some uninterrupted time first thing in the morning to work on the things you don’t enjoy or those pieces of work that have been hanging about that need to be attacked and taken off your to-do list? Or maybe you can do things differently to make them enjoyable, such as having meetings in a different place or whilst walking outside. If you can, delegate those pieces of work to someone who does enjoy doing them.

  3. Know and use your strengths

    You will be more energised using your natural strengths. Try a psychometric assessment such as The Highlands Ability Battery to find out what comes easily and naturally to you. By knowing your strengths and putting yourself in the position to use those strengths, you will feel more satisfied at work. How can you use your strengths to do the tasks you do not enjoy?

  4. Work differently

If you have the opportunity of flexible working, try working when you feel more energised. You are maybe a “lark” and are more productive and energised in the mornings, or, alternatively, an owl and you come to life later on in the day. Try starting earlier and finishing earlier, or starting later and finishing later to work in with your natural time clock.

If you are used to working at your desk or working through your lunch, try taking a lunch break away from the desk. Research shows that people who take a proper lunch break are more productive in the afternoons and have fewer energy slumps later in the day. Use your lunchtime to get some fresh air, get some exercise, meet up with a friend or colleague or try something new! Breaking up the day makes it more interesting.

Everyone now knows that multi-tasking doesn’t work. Instead of having lots of tabs open on your computer and trying to do lots of things at the same time, experiment with trying to do one thing at a time. In the long run, you will be more efficient.

Try changing your environment. This could mean rearranging your desk or going to a cafe or different parts of the office to shake things up a bit.

5. Do something different

Set some goals for yourself to give yourself some purpose to work. This could be learning a new skill that is useful for your work such as learning about a new piece of software or how to code. Or it could be to improve your interview skills or presentation skills. Or take on a career coach or mentor to help you progress in your career.
